The Toronto Summer Music Festival (TSMF) is a classical music festival and academy held annually in Toronto. The festival provides discerning music lovers with an opportunity to enjoy and deepen their knowledge of classical music. It is a unique, one-of-a-kind musical program that is presented in the summer months, when artists of international stature come together to mentor young musicians and to give outstanding concerts in a series of public performances.

TSMF 2018 will explore a breadth of musical perspectives, from days gone by (through works by Brahms, Messiaen, Ravel, Shostakovich), as well as music from today’s composers including Chan Ka Nin, Steve Reich, Kinan Azmeh, Abigail Richardson Schulte and Tim Corlis.

The Toronto Summer Music Festival (Music Festival Directory) often takes its theme from a major milestone or anniversary in the world at large. Because 2018 marks the centenary of the end of World War I, this summer’s Festival theme is Reflections of Wartime, and music inspired by war – past and present – will be explored. From July 12 to August 4, The Toronto Summer Music Festival will showcase masterworks created in response to war and conflict.

But don’t despair, Artistic Director, Jonathan Crow, assures us that: “It won’t all be grim and dour. Some of the most beautiful, emotional and challenging music has been written during times of war and conflict as artists struggled to find meaning and give expression to the horrors gripping the world.” So, beloved music that has kept peoples’ spirits up during times of adversity will also feature, demonstrating 2018’s musically rich theme.

Highlights to look out for include:

  • The Borodin Quartet,
  • Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh,
  • Ben Heppner’s tribute to Gospel Music,
  • A staged L’Histoire du Soldat featuring the TSO Chamber Soloists,
  • Our World War II Big Band Concert,
  • A celebration of Vivaldi at Church of the Redeemer, and
  • Concerts featuring our talented Academy Fellows!

Many of the big-name performers at the Festival will be teaching Master Classes for the elite emerging musicians. In the reGENERATION Concerts, TSM Academy Fellows are joined by their Mentors to perform compelling chamber music repertoire and art song masterpieces in Walter Hall.
