Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre recently hosted a production of the popular Broadway musical, Chicago. The scorching musical satire of crime and celebrity had a limited run from 15 to 20 September and featured Bianca Marroquin and Lana Gordon in the lead roles of Roxie and Velma respectively.
If you missed this highly acclaimed production, there is no need to worry. The Queen Elizabeth has plenty more quality musical theatre in store. After a production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the end of October, the theatre has taken a hiatus, which will hopefully come to an end in the New Year, when Anastasia is set to open on 18 January. This romantic, enchanting take on the story of the mysterious last surviving member of the Romanov family after the Russian Revolution, features Lila Coogan in the lead role and has been favourably acclaimed by the critics.
While it is difficult for theatre lovers to enjoy the latest shows in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry is adapting to the new conditions, with live streaming and social distanced seating being proposed to ensure that the show goes on.
